There are many reasons why selling your jewellery can be a wonderful choice. Perhaps it’s because you’ve realized your pieces are receiving an increasing number of compliments or because you’ve realized your true passion.

It is normal to struggle to know where to begin and how to get your jewellery-making business off the ground. You’ll no doubt meet challenges along the way but a career in jewellery can be very rewarding.

Create a plan

Begin by thinking about where you are now and where you want to be in the next five years. Understanding your current position and having a goal in mind will help you develop the best mindset when creating your business.

Find a mentor

Finding a mentor as you start your jewellery business journey can be beneficial. This may be a teacher or lecturer from one of your jewellery classes or a formal mentor from an organisation. Mentors can help to guide you on the right path and can also assist you with networking.

Start off part time

Once you’ve decided to turn your jewellery-making hobby into a business you may want to begin part time. Starting part-time allows you to put money away for your business without impacting your current income.

Take professional photos

Some will say that product photography can make or break your online store. So if you want to know how to start a jewellery business online, you’ll also need to brush up on your product photography skills or consider hiring a professional photographer.

Make a studio

If you choose to make the jewellery in-house, you’ll need a professional workshop space.

If your production team is larger or your requirements are a little more complex, consider commercial space outside of the home.

Market your jewellery

A good marketing strategy will depend on your product, audience, and budget and may require some trial and error.

Making jewellery sales doesn’t mean having to bombard your followers with sales pitches.

Is full time jewellery making for you?

How do you know when you’re ready to take your jewellery-making hobby to a full-time business?
Knowing if your jewellery business is ready to take full time is a personal decision that only you will be able to make.

You should feel comfortable enough with your financial situation that you no longer feel the need for your second job.
